Your vehicle’s alternator charges the battery and powers the entire electrical system. If there is an issue with your alternator, it often has a domino effect, causing problems to many different parts of your car’s electrical system or battery. A vehicle's car starter is an electrical motor that is connected to the battery. The job of a starter is to set the engine (pistons, crankshaft, etc.) in motion when you turn the ignition switch on.

Alternator Repair and Diagnostics  FREE ESTIMATES

Your mechanics will use a diagnostic device that hooks up to the starter, alternator and battery to determine which of the components are causing your vehicle's symptoms. Then your mechanic will compare to the manufacturer's service limits to determine which part is faulty. Once your mechanic finds the cause of the problem, we'll contact you to let you know the alternator repair cost and then we can begin.

Symptoms of a Failing Alternator

  1. Warning Light: In most cases the light is shaped like a battery, though some show "ALT" or "GEN," meaning alternator or generator, respectively.
  2. Headlights are dim or flickering: Flickering or dim headlights are a strong signal that your alternator may not be working properly. The alternator provides power to the headlights, so the flickering usually means the alternator is struggling to perform.
  3. Electrical Failures: You may have electrical systems that start to act up. This may include power windows, power locks, dashboard lights, air conditioning even your car radio.
  4. Strange Noises: Sometimes alternator failure may cause some strange sounds because the bearings may fail in the engine, creating unusual rattles.
  5. Car stalls or difficulty starting: When the alternator is failing, there might not be enough power in the spark plugs to keep the engine alive, which can cause it to stall for no reason while running, or to have trouble starting.
  6. Battery dies: Batteries may fail on their own but a bad alternator can actually cause the battery to drain because it's failing to recharge. If your battery goes dead, have the alternator checked when replacing the battery so it doesn't happen again.
